Brittany Murphy dies at 32

Actress Brittany Murphy died in the morning of December 20, 2009 due to cardiac arrest.

She was found unconscious in the shower by her mother. She was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and was pronounced dead on arrival.

She was survived by her husband Simon Monjack, her family and friends.

Murphy was known for her movies such as Clueless, 8 mile, Just married, Little black book and the voice of Gloria of Happy Feet.

June 2009 Philippine Nursing Licensure Exam Results

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced on Saturday night that 32,617 out of 77,901 nursing examinees passed the Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination last June 6 and 7.

Golda Manto Yap of the Felipe R. Verallo Memorial Foundation in Bogo, Cebu topped the list.

The June nursing board examination was administered in Manila and 10 other regional offices including Baguio, Cebu, Davao, Legaspi, Lucena, Cagayan De Oro, Iloilo, Tuguegarao, Zamboanga, Pagadian, Tacloban, and Jolo.

The PRC noted that the latest results were 2.64 percent lower than that from the February 2009 exams, which had a 44.51 percent passing rate.

Farrah Fawcett dies at 62

Actress Farrah Fawcett dies at 62 after battling cancer for almost 3 years. She died before 9:30 am, Thursday, June 25, 2009 in a Santa Monica Hospital. Her longtime partner Ryan O’neal and her best friend Alana Stewart was at her deathbed.

“After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away,” O’Neal said. “Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world.”

WHO elevates Influenza Pandemic alert from Phase 5 to Phase 6

In less 6 weeks, Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization, announced that she elevated the pandemic alert from Phase 5 to Phase 6. It means that the Influenza A H1N1 virus have sustained community outbreak in many countries and in 2 different WHO regions.

“Moving to pandemic phase six level does not imply we will see increase in number of deaths or very severe cases,” said Chan.

However, WHO cleared that the the overall severity of the influenza pandemic is moderate. Moderate assessment connotes that most people recover from infection without the need of hospital care, hospitals can cope with the number of people seeking care and levels of influenza infection doesn’t differ to the local seasonal influenza season. There are still no recommendation on travel restrictions and border closures .

Who killed Bill?

David Carradine who played Bill in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill (2003 and 2004) was found dead on his hotel room in Swissôtel Bangkok, Thailand. He was 72.

Initial police reports say that he committed suicide but autopsy revealed that he died of Asphyxiation. Carradine’s family suspected that a foul play may have been involved. They asked the help of FBI for assistance. Carradine’s body was flown to US from Thailand via a United Airlines flight.

Carradine’s family was “profoundly disturbed” as his pictures were published at a local Thai tabloid, Thai Rath. The picture showed Carradine hanging from a support bar inside a closet with his hands and genitals tied.

Carradine’s brother Keith released a statement that says, “The family wants it understood that, per attorney Mark Geragos, any persons, publications or media outlets will be fully prosecuted for invasion of privacy and causing severe emotional distress if the photos are published.”

Philippine Nursing Licensure Exam June 2009

In two weeks time, a total of 78,574 nursing graduates will take the Nursing Board Exam this June 6 and 7, 2009.

According to Philippine Board of Nursing member Marco Sto. Tomas, Manila has the biggest number of examinees at 42,338 followed by Baguio and Cebu.

Board members will go on quarantine from May 27 to June 8 to safeguard the integrity of the examination.

We will be posting the latest RESULTS once released by the PRC.

What is Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome?

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome is characterized by a triad of port-wine stain, varicose veins, and bony and soft tissue hypertrophy involving an extremity. The syndrome was first described in 1900 by two French physicians named Klippel and Trenaunay. They termed the syndrome “naevus vasculosus osteohypertrophicus.” In 1907, Parkes Weber, unaware of Klippel and Trenaunay’s report, described a patient with the 3 aforementioned symptoms as well as an arteriovenous malformation of the affected extremity.

The exact cause of Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome (KTWS) remains to be elucidated, although 4 theories exist:

Intrauterine damage to the sympathetic ganglia or intermediolateral tract leading to dilated microscopic arteriovenous anastomoses as the cause as described by
Deep vein abnormalities resulting to obstruction of venous flow that leads to venous hypertension, the development of varices, and limb hypertrophy
Mesodermal defect during fetal development causes maintenance of microscopic arteriovenous communications
Underlying mixed mesodermal and ectodermal dysplasia

There is no racial predilection is documented for KTWS and both genders are affected equally. It presents at birth or during early infancy or childhood.

Complete history and physical examination is required to diagnose KTWS. However, imaging studies such as arteriography and MRI can be useful in checking for complications.

Treatment of this syndrome can be medical and surgical. Medical interventions are conservative and symptomatic. Use of compression garments and limb elevation help reduce swelling and recurrent bleeding from the capillary or venous malformations. Heel inserts are used for limb discrepancies.

Laser treatments and debulking procedures are also practiced. However, these are very invasive and are generally only used as a last resort.

Complications such as skin breakdown and ulceration, bleeding, and secondary infection can be observed.

Sony Ericsson Free Laptop Promotion: A Hoax

A colleague of mine sent a forwarded email saying that Sony Ericsson is giving away a free laptop! All you have to do is to forward the same email to 8 people on your list and you will receive a certain Ericsson T18 laptop. However, if you forward it to 20 people, you will get the Ericsson R320 laptop.

Forwarded emails usually end up in my Trash folder but I couldn’t resist opening this one. It’s too good too be true so I decided to investigate.

I found out that this email hoax has been circulating since 2000. This new hoax email is almost the same as its predecessor except the former matches a deal from its competitor Nokia. Next, there is no such Ericsson T18 or R320 laptops. These are discontinued cellular phone models from Ericsson. And lastly, Ericsson cellphones are now known as Sony Ericsson after a joint venture by the Japanese consumer electronics company Sony Corporation and the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson to make mobile phones.

Sony Ericsson finally made a statement to end the email campaign.
