It’s great when contestants from American Idol give a whole new meaning to the songs they perform on stage. The theme for tonight’s American Idol was Songs of the Cinema. One notable performance was from Kris Allen who sang “Falling slowly” from the movie Once. It’s like he breathed new life into it.
“Falling Slowly” received a 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song while the movie won the 2007 Independent Spirit Award for best foreign language film. Once is written and directed by John Carney. A modern day musical set on the streets of Dublin. Featuring Glen Hansard from the Irish band “The Frames,” the film tells the story of a street musician and a Czech immigrant during an eventful week as they write, rehearse and record songs that reveal their unique love story1.

Glen Hansard – Falling Slowly Lyrics
I don’t know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can’t react
And games that never amount
To more than they’re meant
Will play themselves out
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You’ll make it now
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can’t go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I’m painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It’s time that you won
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You’ve made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I’ll sing along
