Kissing in the Midst of a Riot

If you look at the center of this photo, you’ll see a couple kissing. No big deal, right? But, taking a closer look at the background makes the photo more interesting. It would seem that the couple is kissing in the midst of a riot. But, the truth is that this photo lies. The photographer of the photo, Richard Lam, admits “initially I thought one of them was hurt.” It was his editor however, who thought they were kissing, not hurt:

“I knew I had captured a ‘moment’ when I snapped the still forms against the backdrop of such chaos but it wasn’t until later when I returned to the rink to file my photos that my editor pointed out that the two people were not hurt, but kissing.”

General Motors’ Pontiac Deluxe Six sedan is the only car constructed from Plexiglas. The 1939 Pontiac was was made to be the main attraction at the New York World’s Fair primarily to show off the engineering wonders of an automobile innards.

In the years following its display in New York, the “Ghost Car” made its way to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. where it sat for eight years before disappearing into the garages of private collectors in the ’80s.

Lizzie Borden was born on July 19, 1860 at Fall River, Mass. and died on June 1, 1927. She was a Sunday school teacher living with her father and stepmother. Lizzie was charged with killing them with an ax on August 4, 1892. Although she was tried and acquitted in 1893, a doubting public continued to believe in her guilt and immortalized its belief by repeating this verse:

Lizzie Borden took an ax

And gave her mother 40 whacks.

And when she saw what she had done,

She gave her father 41.

Sherezade tricked him by telling the king a tale each night, stopping when she got to the most exciting part. If he wanted to hear the rest, he must let her live another day. This went on for 1001 nights, until the king gave up his wicked plan. The stories, traditional and from many parts of Asia were first written down in Arabic in about AD 1000.

One of the greatest artists was Michelangelo, who lived in Italy from 1475 to 1564. He was a painter and a sculptor. His greatest painting covers the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, Rome. It consists of scenes from the Bible-the Creation, the story of Noah and the flood, the apostles-and Michelangelo painted it all by himself, lying flat on his back on scaffolding. It took him four years, from 1508 to 1512.
